How to Get Your Business on the Google Map and Start Getting Reviews

According to Google, “Reviews on Google provide valuable information about your business to both you and your customers. Business reviews appear next to your listing in Maps and Search, and can help your business stand out on Google.”

Your online reputation is your most valuable asset.   Wikipedia’s definition of Reputation Management is “…refers to the influencing and controlling of an individual’s or group’s reputation.”  Protect your reputation by being proactive about getting positive Google reviews.

To get a review, your business needs to be listed on the map first.  Many times, a business is already on the map, but the business owner has not taken the time to “claim” the listing.  By claiming your listing, you will be notified when someone leaves a review, as well as be able to respond to those reviews as the business.

Caution: There are companies that target unclaimed listings to offer their “services” for claiming your listing.  Please note that your Google Map Listing is part of your brand’s intellectual property and should be under your control, not some other company.  Having a Google Map Listing is free so there is no need to pay a monthly or annual fee related to it.

Step One – Make sure you have a Google account established

When we start working with a client, we set up a business Google account.  This account will have a Gmail and YouTube account established, as well as access to Google Analytics and Webmaster Tools.

Step Two – Search for Your Business or Add to the Map

There are two ways to find a business to claim.

First

  1. Log into a Google account that you control.
  2. Go to Google.com
  3. Search for your company name, or variations
  4. Click on CLAIM THIS BUSINESS

Second:

  1. Log into a Google account that you control.
  2. Go to https://www.google.com/maps
  3. Search for your company name, or variations
  4. Click CLAIM THIS BUSINESS
